Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy: Safer Surgery, Faster Recovery

Robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy is a surgical technique used to treat localised prostate cancer. Instead of a large open incision, surgeons use robotic instruments that offer a clear, magnified view and steady control through small incisions in the abdomen.

Compared with traditional open surgery, robotic prostatectomy is consistently linked to less blood loss, fewer transfusions and shorter hospital stays, and many patients return to daily activities sooner. Randomised trial data show that urinary continence, sexual function and cancer control at two years are similar to open surgery in experienced hands; the surgeon's skill and experience matter more than the approach.

Nerve-sparing surgery, done robotically or open when the cancer allows, helps preserve continence and sexual function. Overall, robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy offers a less invasive route to the same cancer control as open surgery.
