How does the stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) affect the risk of preeclampsia?

Asked by Moderator

A mother who already has kidney disease is already at risk of chronic hypertension. If preeclampsia then develops in the second half of pregnancy on top of that, it is termed preeclampsia superimposed on chronic hypertension. Against a background of chronic renal disease or chronic hypertension, or other conditions such as an autoimmune condition, she is at an even higher risk of developing preeclampsia later in pregnancy, and the risk of a small-for-gestational-age baby may also be higher.
