Indian Medical Visa for Ethiopian Citizens

Ethiopian citizens are not eligible for the e-Medical visa, because Ethiopia is not on the portal's e-Visa country list. The visa is a paper application. The patient completes the form online, prints it and submits it with the documents at the Embassy of India in Addis Ababa.

What are the steps?

  1. The Indian hospital generates the Visa Invitation Letter through the Medical and Ayush Visa Portal; Jivo arranges it with the hospital.
  2. The patient completes the visa application online at indianvisaonline.gov.in and prints it.
  3. The patient books or attends the Embassy through its appointment page and submits the signed form with the documents the Embassy asks for.
  4. The fee is paid in US dollars, in cash.
  5. The Embassy decides the application, and the patient collects the passport.

Which documents does the Embassy ask for?

  • The signed hard copy of the online application form.
  • One recent photograph of 51 mm by 51 mm on a white background.
  • The original passport, valid for more than 6 months.
  • A copy of the oral polio and yellow fever card, with the original.
  • The Visa Invitation Letter from the Indian hospital, generated through the Medical and Ayush Visa Portal.
  • A letter or medical report from a local hospital.
  • A bank statement showing a sufficient balance, with a bank letter in the applicant's name. If someone else pays, the sponsor's passport or identity copy and a notarised document signed at the Document Authentication and Registration office are added.
  • A signed undertaking letter for seeking a Medical or Medical Attendant visa, in the prescribed format.

The Embassy adds that it may ask for more documents at the interview.

What does the visa cost?

The visa fee is set by the Government of India and paid online with the application (or at the Indian mission for a paper visa); Jivo confirms the current fee with you before you apply.

How long is the visa valid, and how long does the decision take?

The Embassy's pages do not state a fixed validity or a processing time for Ethiopian nationals, so Jivo confirms both with the Embassy before the patient books the appointment.

If treatment takes longer than the visa allows, the hospital and the Jivo team help the patient apply for an extension on the e-FRRO portal.

The attendant's application and the invitation letter are covered in the attendant guide, and the route from Addis Ababa in the travel and stay guide.
