Which treatments do Kenyans travel to India for?

Cancer leads the list of conditions for which Kenyans seek treatment abroad, followed by heart disease, kidney disease and musculoskeletal and spinal conditions. Blood cancers and stem cell and bone marrow transplants form a further group, and among Kenyan cancer patients blood cancers are strongly associated with treatment in India.

For international doctors, Dr. Dharma Choudhary of BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, conducted a Jivo Masterclass on bone marrow (stem cell) transplant for sickle cell disease on 7 December 2025. Dr. Divya Doval, from the same hospital, conducted a session on diagnosis and management of sickle cell disease on 24 November 2024, and the bone marrow transplant in sickle cell anaemia and other haematological disorders was Dr. Vikas Dua's subject on 28 July 2024. Who treats cancer, kidney, heart and spine patients?

The Jivo Masterclass on cancer: myths, facts and advances was conducted on 7 September 2025 by Dr. Mohit Agarwal, Principal Director & Unit Head - Medical Oncology at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi; see chemotherapy and immunotherapy. A second oncology session, on CAR-T cell therapy, was conducted by Dr. Akash Khandelwal on 9 March 2025.

On the kidney side, Dr. Yajvender Pratap Singh Rana conducted a Jivo Masterclass for international doctors on urology, uro-oncology and kidney transplant on 23 November 2025; the operation is kidney transplant. For the heart, Dr. Z S Meharwal of Fortis Escorts, New Delhi, conducted a session on advances in cardiac surgeries on 26 October 2025, and Dr. Yugal Kishore Mishra of Manipal Hospital conducted one on robotic assisted cardiac surgery on 26 January 2025. The operations are CABG and aortic valve replacement.

For spine and joint conditions, the sessions are Dr. Puneet Girdhar's Jivo Masterclass on spinal surgery of 10 August 2025 and Dr. Subhash Jangid's on recent advances in joint replacement of 13 April 2025, both conducted for international doctors. Does a Kenyan patient need the High Commission?

A Kenyan patient has two routes. The e-Medical visa is applied for and approved online. The High Commission of India in Nairobi issues regular visas, and Kenyans can use either route. Reports go to Jivo on WhatsApp, and a named Indian specialist gives an opinion; the hospital then sends an estimate in US dollars.
