Does a Maldivian patient need a visa for India?

No, not for treatment of up to 90 days. The patient carries a valid passport, the medical documents and proof of sufficient funds. The 90 days count every stay in India in the six months before entry.

When is a medical visa needed?

A patient whose treatment is expected to last longer than 90 days applies to the High Commission of India in Malé for a regular medical visa. Jivo obtains the hospital's invitation letters. The invitation letter carries a unique reference number and goes to the High Commission's official email. The reference number is mandatory on the visa application.

What does the visa cost?

The Government of India sets the fee. It is paid at the High Commission of India in Malé with the application.

What are the steps for a regular medical visa?

  1. The patient completes the online form on indianvisaonline.gov.in and prints it.
  2. The patient takes the printed form and the documents to the High Commission of India in Malé.

Which documents does the High Commission of India in Malé ask for?

  • The online application form, printed and signed, with a recent photograph
  • The passport, valid for at least six months, with a copy
  • A referral letter and medical reports from the patient's doctor or hospital in the Maldives
  • The Indian hospital's invitation letter with its reference number
  • Proof of funds for the treatment and stay, such as a bank statement or a sponsor's letter
  • For an attendant, proof of relationship with the patient

What if treatment runs longer than planned?

A patient already in India applies for an extension to the foreigners' office (FRRO) covering the hospital, not to the High Commission. If treatment runs longer than the visa, the hospital and Jivo help the patient extend it on the e-FRRO portal.
