Indian Medical Visa for Sierra Leonean Citizens

A Sierra Leonean citizen can apply for the e-Medical visa online, and it stays valid for 60 days, beginning on the day of first arrival in India. The High Commission of India in Freetown describes a regular route as well.

Is a Sierra Leonean eligible for the e-Medical visa?

The portal puts Sierra Leone at entry 143 on its list of e-Visa countries, which carries the e-Medical Visa and the e-Medical Attendant Visa. The High Commission's own pages describe only the regular route and do not mention the e-visa for Sierra Leoneans, so Jivo confirms with the High Commission which route applies before the application starts.

What does the e-Medical application need?

  • A scan of the passport's bio page.
  • The letter from the hospital in India, on its letterhead, with the admission date or tentative date the portal suggests.

What are the steps online?

  1. The partner hospital, which is FRRO-registered like every Jivo partner hospital, issues the Visa Invitation Letter, and Jivo arranges it with the hospital for every patient.
  2. The applicant completes the e-Visa (e-Medical) form at indianvisaonline.gov.in and uploads the two files. The portal asks for submission at least 4 days before arrival and no more than 120 days ahead.
  3. The Electronic Travel Authorisation comes by email and is presented on arrival at the immigration checkpoint in India.
  4. Each attendant files a separate e-Medical Attendant application, up to two for one e-Medical visa.

What does the visa cost?

The visa fee is set by the Government of India and paid online with the application (or at the Indian mission for a paper visa); Jivo confirms the current fee with you before you apply.

How long does a decision take?

The portal states no overall processing time. Should a document need re-uploading, the request is normally emailed within 24 hours of submission, and Granted or Rejected is emailed at the end.

What does the High Commission in Freetown ask for on the regular route?

For a regular medical visa the High Commission asks for all the documents it sets out for every visa type, together with:

  • A reference letter from a recognised local doctor or hospital treating or referring the applicant.
  • A copy of the confirmation letter from the Indian hospital offering treatment, sent by the hospital directly to the High Commission.
  • The applicant's bank statement.

How long does the e-Medical visa last?

The e-Medical visa lasts 60 days from first arrival, with multiple entries stamped on the passport within that period.

If treatment takes longer than the visa allows, the hospital and the Jivo team help the patient apply for an extension on the e-FRRO portal.
