Jivo obtains the Visa Invitation Letter from the chosen hospital; every Jivo partner hospital is FRRO-registered.

Which medical visas can Malawian citizens apply for?

Malawi appears on the Government of India's e-Visa list, which opens the e-Medical visa to Malawian passport holders. The regular medical visa, a paper visa open to every nationality, is issued by the High Commission in Lilongwe. Once granted, the e-Medical visa runs for two months (60 days) from arrival in India, with multiple entries during that time.

What does the visa cost?

The visa fee is set by the Government of India and paid online with the application (or at the Indian mission for a paper visa); Jivo confirms the current fee with you before you apply.

How does the e-Medical visa work?

  1. Malawian applicants start on indianvisaonline.gov.in, filing between 120 days and 4 days before the date they land in India.
  2. The application carries two uploads: the passport bio page and a letter from the hospital in India on its letterhead, naming the date or tentative date of admission.
  3. Approval comes as an Electronic Travel Authorization by email, which the patient shows at the immigration checkpoint in India.

How long does the e-Medical decision take?

The e-Medical visa has no published overall processing time. If a document must be uploaded again, the request normally arrives by email within 24 hours of submission, and the applicant then receives the decision, Granted or Rejected.

Which documents does the Lilongwe High Commission ask for?

  • The online application form, filled in and signed, with a clear copy of the passport and of any Indian visas issued
  • Two recent colour photographs, 51 mm by 51 mm
  • A letter of invitation from an approved hospital or doctor in India, giving details of the illness or treatment, its duration and the estimated cost
  • Original medical reports from an approved hospital or doctor in Malawi, with the original referral letter for treatment in India
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the stay and treatment: a bank statement, salary certificate, sponsorship letter or medical insurance
  • A passport valid for at least six months

Normal processing of a regular visa takes three working days, and its validity runs from the date of issue. The High Commission receives applications between 9.00 and 11.00 on working days and delivers documents between 15.00 and 16.00.

Which visa suits which patient?

The regular visa is submitted in person at the High Commission in Lilongwe, where fingerprints and a photograph are enrolled as biometrics. The e-Medical visa needs no visit for biometrics, which are captured at Indian immigration on arrival.

If treatment takes longer than the visa allows, the hospital and the Jivo team help the patient apply for an extension on the e-FRRO portal.
